Wellness and Health Promotion Services (WHPS) is now leading the Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) efforts for UCF Student Development and Enrollment Services. WHPS took over AOD earlier this summer while introducing a new innovative way to screen students for alcohol use called ScreenU. But that is just the start of the exciting and creative programs WHPS is unveiling in effort to keep UCF students safe as they return to campus this fall.

Student Health Services previously led AOD prevention efforts and will continue to partner with the UCF Well-Being departments in helping to treat our students. WHPS Director Maureen Hawkins says it really is a multi-step approach and why partnerships are so important.

“We really would like our students to understand how to use all our substance abuse resources. WHPS will concentrate on the prevention and risk reduction side while Student Health Services will continue its vital clinical and treatment role.”

ScreenU is a brief and anonymous online screening and intervention resource which provides customized feedback for students as they assess their own use of alcohol and other drugs. It also educates them on the negative consequences commonly associated with substance abuse.

WHPS staff and peers will also help to educate students on risk reduction and prevention through group or class presentations, staff and student training, and well-being skill building. In addition, the WHPS team is also planning creative risk reduction programming through partnerships:

  • Do the Knight Thing coaster partnership with Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) and local bars
  • Partnership with FSL to provide risk reduction training
  • Connection with Residence Life for programming
  • The introduction of educational solo cups with risk reduction information
