Biofeedback: Relaxation Training Program

Biofeedback Assisted Relaxation Training Program is a free one-on-one counselor assisted training program which educates students to implement relaxation techniques in a six-session time period. Our goal is to help students reduce the stress responses that are compromising their bodies’ systems and replace them with automatic, positive responses.

How Does Biofeedback Work?

Students will first come in for an initial screening.  After the initial screening, if mutually agreed upon, students will be scheduled for the six-week program. The first biofeedback session is a psychophysiological stress profile to obtain baseline information about the body’s response to stress and relaxation. The next five sessions focus on specific relaxation techniques which include diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, deep muscle relaxation, autogenic training, and guided imagery.

The Biofeedback counselor connects sensors to a student’s body that provide a variety of readings (feedback) which are displayed on a computer screen for them to see. The sensors monitor skin temperature, muscle tension, heart rate, perspiration, and respiration.

Subtle changes will occur. At first, students may not even notice, but the changes will be evident on the monitor. Biofeedback helps to increase awareness and improve self-regulation in order to help students manage their stress responses better. Continued practice of the techniques allows their bodies’ new relaxation responses and behaviors to become automatic. These new habits can help bring relief and improvement to a variety of conditions, including anxiety, migraine headaches, tension headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, non-cardiac chest pain, and pain from improperly functioning muscles in the jaws, shoulders, back, etc.

Does It Hurt?

Not at all. The small sensors feel like the adhesive on a bandage.

How long does it take to get results?

The majority of students report feeling more relaxed immediately. Approximately 85-95% of students decrease their scores on the “Perceived Stress Scale,” which is administered at the beginning and end of the program.

How lasting are the effects?

Once the training is complete, most people find that the benefits continue indefinitely. As with any new healthy lifestyle behavior change, students will need to continue to be mindful of their responses to stress and keep up with their relaxation skills by practicing them regularly.
